Crab lovers gather for fundraiser Saturday

Feb 14, 2012 (The Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Union County Senior Center will be the place to be for crab lovers this weekend.

An all-you-can-eat crab feed will be conducted from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday. The crab feed is being put on by the Union Pacific Railroad Employees Association Club No. 17 as a fundraiser for the many community service projects it supports. The event is open to everyone.

The crab feed will include a no-host bar and music played by a local disc jockey. Fresh, cracked Bornstein crab will be served.

Tickets are $30 and are available at Spruce Street Market and also will be sold at the door.

About 120 of the 200 tickets available for the feed have been sold.

The Union Pacific Railroad Employees Association uses all the money it raises to support about a half a dozen community service programs each year.

In recent years, it has donated to programs and organizations including the Youth In Transition program at La Grande High School, which helps homeless students and those from broken families; the Friday Backpack program, which provides food to elementary school children in Union County; Community Connection of Northeast Oregon's Meals on Wheels program; Special Olympics; and the Apple Eye Care program, which provides eyeglasses to youths from low income families.

The many people the club has helped over the past 12 months include a Union County woman injured in a car accident for whom the club raised money to help with medical expenses and a La Grande boy whose father died.

The club helped the boy by having a turkey mounted by a taxidermist for him.

On Dec. 17, the club put on its annual Santa train event. Santa arrived in La Grande via a train with 500 gift-filled stockings for children who met him at the Union Pacific Railroad's depot. All were distributed to children inside the depot after Jolly Old St. Nick's arrival. The Union Pacific Railroad Employees Club No. 17 has sponsored the Santa train at least a decade.
