Couples celebrating anniversaries share keys to happy marriage

Jun 13, 2010 (The Citizens' Voice - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Couples attending the today's annual wedding anniversary Mass hosted by the Diocese of Scranton know what it takes to sustain a marriage.

Communication and selflessness have steered Sam and Anita Giamber of Pittston through 50 years as husband and wife.

"Communication means a lot," Anita Giamber said. "You have to put the other person first in your life, above yourself." Patience is the key for Elizabeth and Anthony Stelacone of Wyoming, who will celebrate their 25th anniversary on July 4.

"It's not always easy, but with a little patience you get through it," Elizabeth Stelacone said.

More than 300 couples will renew their wedding vows at the Mass, which will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. in St. Peter's Cathedral by Bishop Joseph C. Bambera. The Mass honors couples who have celebrated 25 or 50 or more years of marriage. A reception will follow at Holy Cross High School on Wyoming Avenue, across from the cathedral.

Giamber and her husband were married in 1960. They met in Pittston, her hometown, where they used to see each other at their church, St. Rocco's, or in town, she said.

"Pittston was really bustling in those days," she said.

The couple enjoys a weekly date night, usually dinner on Saturdays, she said. They also make sure to give each other space to enjoy time with friends and family.

"We really do a lot of things on our own also, so we're not smothering each other," she said.

Faith is also important when it comes to marriage, she said. She offers up a prayer for spouses every morning.

Stelacone went through school with her husband, and has known him since 8th grade, she said. They were married on July 4, which fell on a Monday, in a big, old-fashioned ceremony, "For me, it was the perfect day," she said.

The Giambers celebrated their special day with a family dinner at a local restaurant. They have two children, John Giamber and Maria Noone. John lives in North Carolina with his wife Karen and daughters Nicole, 16, and Sarah, 12. Maria lives in Pittston with her husband Greg Noone and children Gregory, 18, and Alexa, 10.

The Stelacones will celebrate their anniversary with a family trip to Punta Cana with their three children, Jay, Lee Ann and Lyn, and five grandchildren.
