Coral Springs proposes leaner budget

(South Florida Sun-Sentinel (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jul. 24--Coral Springs' budget is thinner next year, meaning some cuts will be needed to make up for the shortfall. Still, some programs such as financial literacy will be added and a campaign to "Buy Coral Springs" will urge residents to patronize local businesses. The city will also spend $215,000 over the next year on walking trails stretching to the .



Total budget proposed 2008-2009: $90.9 million

Total budget 2007-2008: $92.3 million



Change: 1.61 percent decrease

Change in property tax revenues: $1.83 million less

Change in property tax revenues: 5.5 percent less

Total tax rate proposed 2008-2009: 3.5414

Tax rate 2007-2008: 3.5425

Impact on homesteaded house valued at $275,000 (whose taxable value has increased 3 percent because of the Save Our Homes tax cap, but which now has a $50,000 homestead exemption): Taxpayers will face a $796.81 bill, or $60.44 less than last year.

Impact on non-homesteaded house valued at $275,000: Taxpayers will face a $973.89 bill, a decrease of 30 cents from last year.

What is being cut: 31 full-time city jobs will be eliminated by attrition; city financial support for West Atlantic Library will end; overtime for city employees will be reduced; 31 part-time positions will be eliminated.

What else changes: The fire assessment fee will increase to $104.25 from $99.95 for single-family homes; the waste management fee will increase to $243 from $232.20 for single-family homes; salary increases for staff are capped at 4.25 percent; water and sewer fees will be raised 5 percent in July 2009. To save money, the city will consider combining events by, for example, approaching the city of Tamarac about a joint Fourth of July celebration. And as of Oct. 1 there will be a 25 cent fare for city buses, a free service to date.

What's next: Public hearings on the budget will be 5:15 p.m. Sept. 12 and Sept. 16at City Hall.
