Cops: Lake County man cashed dead wife's checks
(Orlando Sentinel, The (FL) (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 9--A 47-year-old man cheated a state unemployment office of $3,300 by forging and cashing his dead wife's unemployment checks for more than two months, Leesburg police said.
Joe M. Humphries remained in the Lake County Jail on $54,000 bail Friday after Leesburg police arrested him at his home on Lowe Road. He faces multiple counts of grand theft, forgery, uttering a forged instrument, criminal use of personal identification and scheming to defraud.
An employee with the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation in Leesburg told police she discovered that Mary Raikes had died Jan. 17 but that her account at Insight Financial Credit Union in Leesburg was accessed several times through April 3, according to reports.
