Cookies and durian ice-cream a hit with China expo visitors [Business Times (Malaysia)]

(Business Times (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NANNING: Cookies and durian ice-cream seemed to be the favourites among trade visitors to the Malaysian Pavilion at the recent 11th China-Asean Expo 2014 (CAEXPO 2014).

Mahametta Marketing Sdn Bhd, the manufacturer of durian ice-cream, achieved 10,000 yuan (RM5,210) in sales on the second day of the expo and was expecting potential sales of 50,000 yuan.

Another exhibitor, Perfect Food Manufacturing (M) Sdn Bhd, achieved 200,000 yuan in sales on the second day of the expo.

The homegrown food manufacturer was targeting potential sales of more than 500,000 yuan during CAEXPO 2014.

Perfect Food, the owner of well-known biscuit brand Julie's, has a presence in more than 60 countries, with China being its biggest export market, followed by Singapore and Taiwan.

BMS Sales and Services Sdn Bhd, which specialises in clean raw bird's nest, achieved 50,000 yuan in sales on the first day of the expo. It is confident of netting 100,000 yuan in total sales.

Its managing director Benny Yoh said following China's decision to lift the ban on bird's nest in 2011, he now expects sales to increase by 20 per cent.

First-time participant, Sing Sing Coffee Sdn Bhd took part in CAEXPO 2014 to promote its "Meet U" brand despite already having an online retail presence in China and key distributors in Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai.

Sing Sing Coffee director Boy Chua said its black white coffee was one of the most popular brands among trade visitors.

The company first produced a variant of the white coffee, called Black White under the "Meet U" brand, in 2009 along with another coffee-chocolate malt variant.

Chua expects sales of 100,000 yuan during the expo despite an overly saturated market.

Sing Sing Coffee has operated a factory in Malacca since 1959, and now has stores in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru.

Despite a total floor space of 0.29ha, the organisers were able to accommodate 147 booths for this year's CAEXPO, with the Malaysian Pavilion at Hall 5 of the Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
