Convergys to add 1,600 jobs at Charlotte call centers

Feb 21, 2013 (The Charlotte Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Customer management firm Convergys said Wednesday it will expand two customer service and sales call centers in Charlotte, creating 1,600 new jobs.

The Cincinnati-based company will spend $1.8 million to expand its facility in southeast Charlotte near Independence Boulevard. The rest of the jobs will come at a University City location.

Convergys's clients include a number of Fortune 500 companies. The company said earlier this week that it was currently seeking 750 employees for its Charlotte center serving a cable and internet provider.

The company currently employs about 3,000 in North Carolina, Convergys site leader Jo Fuller said Wednesday. It has other centers in Greenville, Hickory and Jacksonville.

Convergys will hold a job fair at the Park Expo and Conference Center until 4 p.m. today, and at Charlotte's Employment Security Commission office at 5601 Executive Center Drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday to discuss the new Charlotte positions. Candidates can also apply online.

Most of the jobs will be in technical and sales support by phone, email and Web chat.

The Charlotte Chamber hosted the announcement at its uptown offices Wednesday morning. Chamber chairman Brett Carter said before Wednesday, the Chamber had announced 3,000 call center jobs over the past few years. More than 13,000 people in Mecklenburg County work at more than 50 call centers.

Wednesday's event was the latest in a regular string of jobs announcements by the Chamber. In September, the Chamber announced that Odyssey Logistics & Technology would expand and add 100 jobs. In June, industrial supplier MSC Industrial Direct Co. Inc. said it would bring a co-headquarters to Davidson, bringing 400 jobs.
