Congressional Briefing: Iran's Nuclear File Referred to UN Security Council: Challenges and Options

(Comtex Business Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Mar 09, 2006 (U.S. Newswire via COMTEX) --News Advisory:

In light of the decision by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to refer Iran's nuclear file to the United Nations Security Council, co-chairs of the Iran Policy Committee and other experts are to brief Members of Congress on the nuclear weapons program of Iran and options for the international community.

The program, co-sponsored by U.S. Reps. Ed Towns (D-N.Y.), Thomas Tancredo (R-Colo.), and Bob Filner (D-Calif.), "Iranian nuclear weapons program; trends, challenges, and options," is to be held in HC-6, United States Capitol, Thursday, March 9 at 5 p.m.

Paul Leventhal, president of the Nuclear Control Institute, is to examine various challenges posed by Iran's nuclear weapons program in relation to the referral of Iran's nuclear file to the UN Security Council and the future role of the IAEA regarding Iran.

Alireza Jafarzadeh of Strategic Policy Consulting is to provide a complete picture of Iran's nuclear weapons program and the regime's new strategy to proceed with such a program. In August 2002, Jafarzadeh revealed for the first time the then- secret nuclear sites in Natanz and Arak, which triggered the International Atomic Energy Agency inspections of Iran.

Captain Chuck Nash, (USN, ret.), who is the chair of the Military Options Committee of the IPC, is to examine the much- debated military option regarding Iran.

The IPC President, Professor Raymond Tanter, plans to examine the regime change option, in light of Iran's accelerating efforts to develop a nuclear weapon.

WHERE: United States Capitol, HC-6, Washington, D.C.

WHEN: Thursday, March 9 2006; 5 p.m.
