Computer company expands and relocates [The Frederick News-Post, Md.]
(Frederick News-Post (MD) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Mar. 4--Christopher Phelps began his computer business in his basement 41u2 years ago. Since then, business growth led to two moves to larger quarters.
Phelps' latest move in November to a 1,750-square-foot location at 1446 W. Patrick St. was because of improved business, he said.
Phelps said CWP Tech Solutions is a customer-focused and results-oriented network design, installation and management company. The company also has expertise in network security, voice communication via Internet Protocol telephone, wireless networking, structured cabling, file and application servers with backup, graphic design, web design and computer repair.
A Frederick native, Phelps was a senior information technology employee at Frederick Memorial Hospital, responsible for physicians' IT requirements.
"My customers needed a little bit more tailored needs the hospital didn't offer, and they urged me to go out on my own. That's how CWP was started," Phelps said.
Today, CWP Tech Solutions has 140 customers and eight employees. "And things are running very nicely," Phelps said.
The computer industry is not affected by a depressed economy, Phelps said.
"It seems to me that IT is so necessary that the economic climate doesn't matter. In this climate, you don't have to hire a full-time IT person," Phelps said. "With us, we are quick to respond and you don't get one brain, you get eight."
Being humble helps in business, Phelps said. "If any computer guy tells you he knows everything, he's lying."
Phelps subscribes to KISS acronym: "Keep it simple stupid." He also developed another acronym: FORD. "I provide you the facts, my opinion, my recommendation but at the end of the day, you make the decision," Phelps said. "That way there's no animosity, and it gives control to the client."
CWP Tech Solutions is a family business. His father, Bill Phelps, is the office administrator.
Having employees with personality is important to any business, Phelps said. "I can teach people to do their jobs but having the personality to deal with customers, combined with good morals, are keys to business success."
