Comcast Begins Rollout of Residential 2 Gig Service in Washington State

Comcast (News - Alert) today announced it will roll out its new residential multi-gigabit broadband service to more than 1 million Washington homes starting this summer. Gigabit Pro is a symmetrical, 2 Gigabit-per-second service that will be delivered via a fiber-to-the-home solution and offered to customers throughout Comcast's footprint in Washington.

In addition, Comcast is launching Extreme 250, a new 250 Mbps Internet speed tier with immediate availability for Washington customers.

"Technology is a passion for many in the state of Washington, and we're delighted to offer our customers new Internet tiers like the Extreme 250 and Gigabit Pro that will allow them to do more online, across multiple devices," said Len Rozek, Regional Senior Vice President of Comcast Cable's Washington Region. "We will also continue to look for opportunities to increase speeds to not only stay ahead of customer demands, but to provide a wide range of options that meet customer needs."

Gigabit Pro will be available to homes within close proximity of Comcast's fiber network and will require installation of professional-grade equipment. The company has fiber at the core of its network and, for the past decade, it has invested billions of dollars to extend that fiber deeper into neighborhoods and closer to homes. To date, Comcast has built out more than 145,000 route miles of fiber across its service area, including throughout Washington, to serve residential communities with a fiber-to-the-home solution.

"Comcast has been a good working partner with King County as we seek to empower our citizens and businesses with more and greater telecommunications services. This latest announcement is yet another step in the evolution of their etwork," said Metropolitan King County Councilmember Jane Hague.

Comcast has made significant investments in Washington over the years, doubling the capacity of its network every 18 months. Additionally, the company has been delivering multi-gig (up to 10 Gbps) Ethernet service to businesses in Washington since 2011.

Comcast is currently testing DOCSIS 3.1, a scalable, national, next generation 1 Gbps technology solution with plans to begin rolling it out in early 2016. When fully deployed, it will mean almost every customer in Comcast's national footprint will be able to receive gigabit speeds over the existing network (a combination of both fiber and coax). Comcast has announced Gigabit Pro rollouts in Atlanta, California, Chattanooga, Chicago, Florida and Nashville and plans to roll out to more cities throughout the year.
