Comcast to add jobs to keep up with service demand
(Record, The (Stockton, CA) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Mar. 11--Comcast is adding 60 jobs in the region to meet customer demand for high-speed Internet and cable television services.
This follows the addition of 175 technical employee positions added in September in preparation for a new $12 million technical operations center, slated to open in July in Natomas, near Arco Arena.
The work-force expansion has to do with increasing service because of strong residential growth in the area as well as reaching out to established neighborhoods, said Bryan Byrd, a Comcast spokesman based in Sacramento.
"The facility is just replacing an older facility and streamlining some things," he said. "And we're bringing on people to improve customer-response time and service."
The Sacramento regional headquarters serves a Central California region that stretches from Visalia to Redding. The center will house 550 employees.
The additional hiring is expected to be completed in time for the opening of the new center.
The jobs are of two types: call-center customer-service representatives and field staffers, who install new services and repair equipment for existing customers.
A year ago, Comcast rolled out plans to boost the speed of its broadband Internet service and add online services, such as video on demand, in an effort to broaden its offerings against competitors.
Competitor AT&T hasn't been idle in its fight for customers in the Internet and TV programming sector and has been bundling its services at special prices.
AT&T, formerly known as SBC, recently launched an online promotion for its residential high-speed Internet service in a move to get dial-up and cable customers to switch and to attract first-time Internet users to choose broadband.
That program offers service for $12.99 per month with a 12-month commitment.
AT&T also has partnered with EchoStar DISH Network Satellite TV to offer broadcast programming services.
"It's a very competitive industry these days," said Vanessa Smith, AT&T spokeswoman in Sacramento.
