Colombia names new finance chief

(EFE Ingles Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Bogota, Feb 16 (EFE).- President Alvaro Uribe on Friday named his chief of staff, Oscar Ivan Zuluaga, to replace Alberto Carrasquilla as Colombia's finance minister, the government said.

Zuluaga, 50, is an economist by training who previously served in the Senate and as mayor of the city of Pensilvania in his native province of Caldas, a coffee-growing region west of Bogota.

Carrasquilla announced his departure earlier Friday, indicating that his reasons for leaving the post were "strictly personal."

Uribe's office said in a brief statement that Zuluaga's erstwhile deputy, Cecilia Alvarez-Correa, will take over as presidential chief of staff.

In addition to his career in public life, Zuluaga, who holds a master's degree in public finance from England's Exeter University, has taught financial mathematics and investment theory at the college level.

A long-time ally of Uribe, Zuluaga played a big role in the president's successful effort to win another four-year term in last year's election. EFE
