City eateries told to clean up their act by inspectors

Jul 31, 2009 (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Several restaurants and cafeterias were ordered to scrub down their eateries this month after Milwaukee health inspectors saw too much dirt and grime.

Rhino Foods on Hampton Ave. had an accumulation of dust and dirt on the ceiling, the vents and the beams in the food preparation area, according to inspection records from mid-July.

Food debris was also built up on the grinder and cutting boards.

Meanwhile, an inspector reviewing Cousins Subs at 801 E. Capitol Drive on July 21 gave this suggestion: "Facility needs to increase frequency of cleaning, in general." And the cafeteria for employees at Aurora Healthcare on W. Montana St. needed to clean the slime buildup in the floor drains -- it can be a breeding ground for fruit flies, an inspector wrote.

In interviews, staff for all those establishments said Thursday the problems have since been resolved.

In the past month, records showed the Milwaukee Health Department inspected about 380 restaurants, bars, cafeterias and other places where food is served.

Public Investigator found that about 16% of establishments inspected in the past month had three or more critical violations. A critical violation is one that is serious enough to increase a patron's risk of getting sick from a food-borne illness.

Just more than 50% of restaurants and other establishments passed their health inspections without any critical violations. Among the tidy spots: Water Buffalo on Water St., Noodles & Company on W. Oklahoma Ave., Real Chili at 419 E. Wells St., Ethiopian Cottage on N. Farwell Ave. and the main kitchen at the Milwaukee Athletic Club.

But some restaurants and cafeterias did not have such stellar records.

But first, here's a look at what else we found: Locust Food Market on N. 10th St. had a severe grain beetle infestation in its pet area, according to an inspection report from late June. Rodent droppings were found on some shelves and ants were crawling in an aisle. The employee rest room also didn't have hot or cold water.

A few restaurants were reminded they can't keep food, or boxes of food, on the ground -- even in a cooler or freezer.

That's what happened at the Bradford Beach House and Champion Chicken. Workers at both places told Public Investigator they've moved the products.

Public Investigator tried to contact all the eateries for comment for this story. Responses were included from every restaurant or establishment that agreed to discuss the inspection reports.
