City board to hear robo trash pitch

Dec 10, 2008 (The Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The director of Seymour Department of Public Works will continue his push for automated trash pickup at the Board of Public Works and Safety meeting Thursday.

Dick Wilde will request permission for the department to advertise for bids for the proposed system, which would eliminate the need for city workers to pick up heavy trash cans to dump them into trucks.

By going automated, Wilde said, the city would save money on worker compensation claims as well as on man hours because it takes fewer workers to operate than the current system.

The meeting takes place at 11 a.m. at City Hall and is open to the public.
Wilde has already presented information about the program to the board of works and common council.
After hearing a presentation last month from Indianapolis-based Best Equipment, a company that provides equipment, including trucks and totes, for automated trash pickup, board of works members were hesitant to sign off on the project because of cost.

The program would cost the city just more than $1 million to start up, with $550,000 going toward the purchase of two new trucks and another $520,000 for the purchase of more than 8,000 trash bins for every customer in the city.

By going with Best Equipment, the city would enter into a seven-year lease purchase on the trucks with annual payments of $180,476 beginning in 2010.

Wilde said he is hurrying the process along because if the city doesn't approve the program now, costs to implement it will go up.

If board members agree to seek bids, they can still back out of the plan.
