City approves new cell phone tower
Dec 30, 2008 (Yakima Herald-Republic - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A plan by US Cellular to erect a 100-foot tower at the Chinook Business Park in northeast Yakima has received environmental approval from the city.
The city's review of the application under the State Environmental Policy Act determined the cell phone tower will have no significant adverse environmental impact, and the company will not be required to submit an environmental impact statement for the project, according to a news release the city's planning division issued Tuesday. The city did require standard mitigation measures for the project, mostly dealing with adherence to city codes.
US Cellular plans to build its tower at the corner of North Fifth and East S streets, which is in a district zoned M-1 for light industrial uses.
Before the company can obtain building permits, there is a land-use hearing on the project scheduled for Jan. 22. The city hearing examiner will issue his decision within 10 business days, followed by a two-week appeal period. So the soonest that US Cellular could obtain a building permit would likely be late February.
There are several other cell phone towers in the city. The most recently approved application was for a 120-foot tower on River Road for the company doing business as Clear Talk.
