Citizens warned against organ transplant scams [Arab News (Saudi Arabia)]

(Arab News (Saudi Arabia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)    •  ABHA: ARAB NEWS The director general of the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation, Faissal Shaheen, warned citizens against being duped by international scam networks that use the Internet to advertise financially appealing offers for organ transplantation.

Shaheen noted that the recent wave of scams has led to the death of a number of people who have fallen victim to these illegal, and extremely risky dealings.

The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation is the official body tasked with overseeing all transplant procedures in the Kingdom through its centers located within a number of hospitals.

According to Shaheen, citizens may be exposed to these offers through their e-mail accounts or on social networking sites. In most cases, the scammers request a small sum of money in exchange for their assistance in facilitating an organ transplant operation.

Shaheen disclosed that the center has already received numerous reports from various countries where patients have been unknowingly involved in both scams and blackmail incidents that compel victims to pay for improper transplant operations.

Despite the recent surge in scams, there have not yet been any reported cases of human organ trafficking in the Kingdom, he said.

Shaheen has advised patients wishing to undertake transplant operations abroad to first visit the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation in order to obtain all relevant information regarding the procedure, so as to ensure all operations occur safely and smoothly.
