CHOICE OF LONG DISTANCE CARRIER PUT ON HOLD (TRAI has decided to initiate fresh consultations on carrier access code)
(India Business Insight Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which was scheduled to announce its recommendations on carrier access code (CAC), has decided to initiate fresh consultations.
TRAI will now include the companies which have applied for licences for national long distance (NLD) and international long distance (ILD) services in the discussions. About 13 companies have applied for NLD licences including Hutchison Essar and Spice Communications and five companies have applied for ILD licences including Sify Communications and Spice Communications. TRAI also wants to observe the market after these companies start operations. As of Mar 2006, long distance operations are provided by only Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, which provides NLD services, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd which provides only ILD services and Bharti Televentures and Reliance Infocomm which provide both NLD and ILD services.
CAC, when announced, is expected to enable consumers to select their long distance operator and result in lower tariff owing to increased competition.
