China Mobile Marks down GPRS Service

BEIJING, Jan 05, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) --
Branches of China Mobile (SEHK: 0941 and NYSE: CHL) recently marked down GPRS service in recession.

The move aims to compete with China Telecom Corporation Ltd. (NYSE: CHA and SEHK: 0728)'s newly-launched nationwide CDMA service SurFing, which offers mobile phone users with broader access to the Internet and value-added telecom services, noted analysts. In addition, China Mobile plans to cut its mobile tariff by over 10% in 2009.

As planned, China will issue 3G licenses at early 2009, a person in the know disclosed earlier. Under the scheme, China Mobile, the nation's biggest telecoms operator by market value, will be authorized to offer services based on China's homebrewed TD-SCDMA technology, while China Unicom is expected to get a WCDMA license and China Telecom, a CDMA2000 permit, according to Mr. Li.

If so, the number of China Mobile's subscribers will be likely to shrink because of immature TD-SCDMA terminals.
