China approves sales of iPhone 6

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) China on Tuesday approved Apple Inc.'s iPhone 6 for sale from mid-October after the company said it addressed government concerns about possible security flaws in the newest model of the popular mobile phone.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology delayed the release of the phone due to concerns that three of the diagnostic tools used by the phone's operating system might capture users' personal information, the ministry said in a statement on its website.

The ministry said it identified loopholes in Apple's iOS8 operating system that could be used to take control of a phone without the owner's permission.

The ministry said it received assurances from Apple that the company had resolved the problems and would "never allow any government agency of any country to install any 'backdoors' in any of the company's products or any of its services." The ministry's concerns seem to be related to revelations by whistleblower Edward Snowden that the U.S. National Security Agency had compromised hardware sold by American companies to China.

iPhone 6 will be available in Apple stores beginning Oct. 17.
