Children's Hospital Los Angeles Receives $429,078 Grant from Kohl's Department Stores to Support Safety and Injury Prevention Programs for Kids

Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) safety and injury prevention program earned a significant grant when Kohl's Department Stores announced they had awarded $429,078 to CHLA's nationally recognized safety and injury prevention program for kids. Officials from Kohl's Cares cause merchandise program announced the grant at the annual safety and injury prevention fair put on by the hospital and the department store chain in West Hills, Calif., on Dec. 13.

Kohl's and Children's Hospital share a common conviction: Prevention education can break the pattern of unintentional injury. Combining instruction with raising awareness, Kohl's and CHLA have collaborated to promote the importance of utilizing proper safety techniques indoors and outdoors to save the lives of children and reduce unintentional injuries.

"The fair was a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with Kohl's to bring vital injury prevention messages to local families and their children," says Jeffrey Upperman, MD, the hospital's Trauma Program director, who accepted the grant on behalf of Children's Hospital. Upperman, recently appointed to the newly established National Advisory Committee on Children and Disasters, says that joint efforts between institutions like CHLA and esteemed corporations like Kohl's can help lead the way toward the reduction of tragic and unnecessary deaths and injuries to children involved in motor vehicle crashes and other accidents. "We want to thank Kohl's, their associates and customers for their longstanding support of the hospital's injury prevention program."

Since 2004, Kohl's has donated more than $4 million to CHLA and its initiatives.

Kohl's commitment to Children's Hospital Los Angeles is made possible through the Kohl's Cares® cause merchandise program. Through this initiative, Kohl's sells $5 books and plush toys where 100 percent of net profit benefits children's health and education programs nationwide, including hospital partnerships like this one.

The annual educational fair that was held at Kohl's store in West Hills taught children and families a variety of safety tips to protect families during sports activities, in cars, as pedestrians and in the home. At the event, Kohl's offered families inspections of their car seats by certified car seat technicians and some even received a free replacement car seat.

"The fair was an opportunity to share vital education, safety tips and resources on child passenger safety to parents in the community, enhancing our goal of reducing child injuries in car accidents, which is currently a leading cause of death in young people," says Helen Arbogast, MPH, CHES, CPST, manager of the Injury Prevention and Trauma Program at Children's Hospital.
