Children reel in trout at fishing derby

ORWIGSBURG, May 09, 2010 (Republican and Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Collin Corman, 12, of Kutztown, cast his line into Fisher's Dam over and over again Saturday. Within 25 minutes, he caught five trout.

"He even got a palomino trout," said Rick Stopp, Kutztown, one of Corman's friends.

The white-colored fish measured 17 inches.

Corman was among the more than 100 people gathered at Fisher's Dam in Orwigsburg for the 19th annual Children's Fishing Rodeo, organized by the Orwigsburg Children's Fishing Rodeo Committee.

The two-day event continues today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free for children up to age 15. They are allowed a limit of five trout per day.

The rodeo is financed by local donations. The committee paid S&A Trout Pond $1,650 to stock the dam with more than 500 trout, according to Mel Barnes, Orwigsburg, committee chairman.

"We make a donation before we leave. I just hope it keeps going so the kids can keep coming here every year and they can keep doing it," said Corman's father, Scott. "Money is scarce for a lot of people in a lot of communities, but hopefully with donations and other funding, hopefully they can keep it for the kids." Early morning showers might have chased away some families Saturday, Barnes said.

"Last year, I think we had 187 children total. This year, we should have 150 or more," Barnes said.

"I've been coming here a long time," said Rick Stopp, also of Kutztown. He was with his son, Ryan.

"He's 15. I've been bringing him here since he was about 3," Rick Stopp said of his son.

Just after 9 a.m., Kevin Hoffman, 14, of Orwigsburg, reeled in a 17-inch trout.

He said it put up a fight.

"It was pretty good. But it was pretty exciting," Hoffman said.

Jeremy Faust, 15, of Orwigsburg, pulled out the occasional sunfish, but eventually caught a 12-inch trout.

"They stock pretty big fish. Coming out here, you'll have a pretty good time with friends," Faust said.

"It's fun and easy to catch a fish," said Maddie Bartush, 14, of Orwigsburg. This was the first year she came out to the rodeo, and she snagged rainbow trout soon after she dropped her line in the water.
