CEA Welcomes Federal Judge Injunction Against AG Hood's Google Investigation

The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro (News - Alert), president and CEO, Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, regarding U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate's preliminary injunction against Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood's Google (News - Alert) subpoena:

"We are pleased with this injunction. Attorney General Hood's case against Google is a dangerous crusade against free speech on behalf of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Attorney General Hood can't exert discretional control over search, streaming and content distribution online simply because of his own personal objections to the content.

"This is a good day for creators, innovators and all who rely on the Internet as a platform of expression. Attorney General Hood should cease his attacks on one of the most robust and innovative growth sectors of the U.S. economy. We urge the MPAA to stop facilitating government actions which chill speech, and, instead, embrace the Internet as a transformative and beneficial distribution vehicle for artists and studios."

Last month, CEA filed an amicus brief along with the Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA (News - Alert)) and Engine in support of online platforms and intermediaries such as Google, arguing that state officials do not have the discretion to dictate free expression on the Internet.
