CEA Urges Confirmation of Michelle Lee as Director of U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro (News - Alert), president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, regarding today's Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing on Michelle Lee for Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (U.S. PTO):

"We urge the Senate to act quickly and confirm Michelle Lee as the next head of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. America needs a PTO leader who will advance a reform agenda and curb the patent troll racket that is hurting our innovative businesses, choking our economy and killing U.S. jobs.

"As interim U.S. PTO Director, Lee has proven herself to be the right person for the job, making significant progress toward increasing patent quality and cutting the patent backlog. By confirming Michelle Lee, the Senate can assure our entrepreneurs that they have a true advocate for innovation on their side."

In support of Michelle Lee's nomination, CEA's Innovation Movement launched an online grassroots petition asking Senators to confirm Lee as quickly as possible. In July, CEA praised the White House for bypassing the nomination of Phil Johnson.
