CBP Officers Discover $610,771 in Undeclared Currency at Nogales Port of Entry

Nogales, Ariz. -- Customs and Border Protection officers working the Mariposa port of entry discover a total of $610,771 in undeclared currency in two separate seizures.
The first seizure occurred on Sunday, September 27, CBP officers were conducting routine inspections of travelers and vehicles leaving the United States when they selected a 2008 Chevy Captiva for inspection. The vehicle was occupied by two individuals.
CBP officers utilized a mobile x-ray unit to scan the vehicle. Officers noticed an anomaly in the image. Upon further inspection, officers discovered packages hidden within the dash area of the vehicle. A total of 66 packages were removed from the dash which totaled $555,189.00.
The second seizure occurred on Saturday, October 3, CBP officers again were screening travelers and vehicles leaving the United States when they selected a 2004 Chevy Silverado pick-up truck for inspection. The truck was driven by a 36-year-old man from Sonora, Mexico.
Officers utilized the mobile X-ray unit and detected a discrepancy in the image. Officers discovered packages hidden within a non-factory compartment over the rear tire well of the vehicle. A total of four packages containing $54,582 were removed from the vehicle.
In both cases the money was seized. The violators were arrested and turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation.
