Cartoon riots in Pakistan leave 2 dead

(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Two protesters were killed Tuesday in riots protesting cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in the Pakistani cities of Islamabad and Lahore.

Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao told the private GEO television station the demonstrators were killed in Lahore by a private security guard as they tried to set fire to a bank.

Hundreds of people tried to burn outlets of McDonald's and KFC, and guards fired into the air to stop the Punjab assembly being torched, the BBC said.

In Islamabad, the Press Trust of India said hundreds of anti-Western protesters stormed the high security diplomatic enclave, damaging cars. Police used tear gas and water cannons to dispel the demonstration.

At least 12 people died in demonstrations last week against the cartoons in Afghanistan.

For two weeks, the Muslim world has been protesting the spread of the cartoons, originally published in Denmark.
