Carnahan, Bradley, Ness honored at press gathering

(St. Joseph News-Press Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 24--Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan was honored Friday as the winner of the highest award given by the Northwest Missouri Press Association.

The James C. Kirkpatrick Award, given in recognition of service to the state, was presented at a noon luncheon at the Holiday Inn Riverfront in St. Joseph. Ms. Carnahan received praise for her efforts to ensure fair and open elections, among other initiatives.



Later Friday, the press group saluted one of its own, David Bradley, publisher of the St. Joseph News-Press. Mr. Bradley received the group's Merrill Chilcote Award for service to journalism in Northwest Missouri. He was cited, in particular, for his longstanding support of community journalism throughout the region.

Judy Ness, community outreach manager with the Kansas City Power & Light Co., and previously with Aquila, received the Craig Watkins Friend of Northwest Press Award. Ms. Ness was recognized for her efforts over several years in working to foster good working relationships between the utility and the publishers and editors in the region.



The press group concluded its 119th annual meeting by announcing new officers. Jim Fall, representing the Maryville Daily Forum, will be the 2009 president. He succeeds Dennis Ellsworth, executive editor of the News-Press.

Other 2009 officers include Matt Daugherty, publisher of The Smithville Herald and The Kearney Courier, vice president; Kathy Conger, advertising manager of the Bethany Republican-Clipper, secretary; and W.C. Farmer, publisher of the Atchison County Mail at Rock Port, treasurer.

Members of the board of directors include Mr. Ellsworth, as immediate past president; Leslie Speckman, publisher of the Savannah Reporter; Kay Wilson, publisher of the Nodaway News Leader at Maryville; Steve Tinnen, publisher of the Clinton County Leader at Plattsburg; Jamey Honeycutt, publisher of the Cameron Citizen-Observer; Chuck Haney of Chillicothe; and Steve Booher, multimedia news editor of the News-Press.
