Caraga folk already feel the crunch as thievery, snatching, carjacking cases on the rise

Oct 21, 2008 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) --
The second wave of the Global economic crunch may already have reached Caraga shores as local residents, especially those already suffering from unemployment and underemployment due unavailability of jobs, are already moaning in pain as more and more individuals now have less purchasing power.

Some mining companies who have just take off due to demand of metal ores, especially nickel, copper during preparation in the recently concluded 2008 Beijing Olympics are now planning to shut down, some have already slow down operations due to low demand of metal ores in the world market.

Most of the metal ores from Caraga Region are sold to China .
Mining firm San Roque Metals Incorporated spokesman and Vice President for Public Affairs former Butuan City Councilor Ryan Anthony Culima told PNA mining companies in Caraga Region have slowed down operations due to low global market demand.

Our mining company will temporarily stop operations by next month as market prices, including demand have gone down significantly, Culima said.

With 56 mining firms operating in the mineral resources-rich Caraga Region, aside from 37 wood processing firms, some have expired permits, no doubt Caraga Region is not only the timber corridor but the mining capital of the country today.

In last Tuesdays Butuan City Peace and Order Council meeting, the body has called on attention of the law enforcers regarding the rising cases of carjacking and carnaping incidents involving motorcycles.

Snatching of mobile phones in public places in broad daylight have also been rising including robbery incidents involving Akyat-Bahay.

A nipa house here where the wife and husband were working as waitress and cook of a restaurant in the city, lost all their cooking pans, water pail and kitchen utensils after thieves ransacked their house.

The thieves took all the items from the kitchen after sensing no other valuable things can be taken away. The steel kitchen utensils, cooking pans and water pails were later found at a local scrap iron buyer in the city sold only at P8 per kilo.

Butuan City Traffic Czar Alfredo Radaza, LTTMO Chief, admitted before the City Peace and Order Council that there is really a significant increase in carjacking and carnapping incidents involving single motorcycles mostly XRM Honda brand in the city.

For this month alone, some 20 motorcycles were stolen, three owner-drivers were shot dead in broad daylight in separate occasions by still unidentified suspects after failing to give in to the carjackers demands, in turning over their motorcycles.

In those 20 cases, only three were solved while the rest are still under investigation. DCT/BS/utb
