Capella University Launches Online Master's Degrees and Certificate Programs in Nursing Informatics and Health Care Informatics

MINNEAPOLIS --(Business Wire)--

With a 2015 federal deadline for health care facilities to go paperless, informatics has become one of the fastest growing careers in health care. To help meet that demand, Capella University (News - Alert) is launching five new online informatics programs that focus on the use of data and technology in health care settings to improve individual patient outcomes and overall health care quality. The new programs include MSN and RN-to-MSN Nursing Informatics (News - Alert) specializations, an MHA Health Care Informatics specialization, and Nursing Informatics and Health Care Informatics certificates. Capella is also expanding its innovative FlexPath direct-assessment learning model to two additional specializations, the Mobile specialization and the Web Application specialization in its Bachelor of Science (BS) in Information Technology, System Development program. Capella University (http://www.capella.edu) is a regionally accredited online university* that offers online degree programs designed to help working adults advance in their careers.

Capella's MSN and RN-to-MSN in nursing informatics are accredited by CCNE and align with AACN, QSEN and ANCC

Like all of Capella's nursing degrees, the university's MSN and RN-to-MSN specializations in Nursing Informatics hold accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)** and incorporate the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's (AACN) Essentials of Master's Education in Nursing. Capella's master's specializations in Nursing Informatics are also aligned to Quality & Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies, Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform (TIGER) Initiative Informatics competencies, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) nursing informatics standards, which will prepare graduates to sit for the Nursing Informatics board certification exam upon completing their MSN Nursing Informatics degree. Students can earn up to eight credits (two courses) through prior learning assessment if they already hold ANCC's RN-BC Informatics Nursing credential-saving students up to six months an more than $3,000 on a Capella MSN in Nursing Informatics.

MHA in Health Care Informatics aligns with NCHL and CPHIMS

Capella's competency-based curriculum for the master's in Health Care Informatics and the Health Care Informatics certificate is built around relevant, real-world health care problems to ensure students gain the skills they need to take leadership roles in such areas as implementation of Electronic Health Records (EHR); compliance with ICD-10, an international medical classification system; and the integration of information technology within a health care organization to maximize efficiency and improve population health.

Students can earn up to 12 credits (three courses) through prior learning assessment if they hold the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information & Management Systems (CPHIMS) certification-saving up to nine months and more than $5,700 on a Capella MHA in Health Care Informatics.

New informatics programs feature exclusive virtual health system lab

All of Capella's new informatics programs use Capella's exclusive Vila Health™ simulated health system, an immersive, virtual lab that allows students to practice real-world informatics situations and challenges first hand, including improving interoperability, clinical workflow, meaningful use initiatives, and population health.

$1,500-$4,000 scholarships available for new Informatics programs plus HIMSS membership

Students who start the MSN or RN-to-MSN Nursing Informatics specialization or MHA Health Informatics specialization between January and April 2015 and meet other scholarship requirements will receive a $4,000 scholarship. Students who start the Nursing Informatics Certificate or Health Care Informatics Certificate program will receive a $1,500 scholarship. For complete eligibility and application information, see:

Two online BS in IT programs added to FlexPath

Two additional programs are now available as part of Capella's innovative FlexPath learning model, allowing students to choose between FlexPath and Capella's standard online learning format. FlexPath uses a competency-based, direct-assessment learning model rather than a traditional credit-hour standard. This allows students to work at their own pace, which offers the potential to further reduce the cost and time to complete a program. The new FlexPath offerings include:
