Cancun offers cheery atmosphere, restaurant pros
WARRENSBURG, Jan 27, 2012 (The Daily Star-Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Cancun Mexican Cuisine adds cheer to the area's dining choices.
Greeted with a smile, patrons are escorted from the avocado anteroom through an archway and into the dining room. In booths or chairs that depict happy suns, customers sit at one of 32 tables with carved scenes of life from south of the border. They are treated to hot tortilla chips and salsa while searching the menu.
Owners Roberto and Shera Oyervides have 11 years of restaurant experience.
Daily luncheon specials, shrimp dishes, salads and traditional fare -- such as tacos, tamales and fajitas -- are found on the menu with dinners, desserts and appetizers.
"The hot wings are pretty yummy," Shera said.
Talking for Roberto, Shera said chorizo pollo is a house specialty.
"It's a chicken breast and it has the Mexican sausage called chorizo on top of it with cheese sauce," Shera interpreted.
Another specialty is parrillada Mexicana, for family-style dining.
"It's a big plate that will feed like a family of 100 -- I'm exaggerating. But, it's carne asada; chicken; carnitas, which is pork; the chorizo; you get rice and beans; lots of tortillas; lots of tacos. That'll definitely feed a few people," Shera said.
Shera and Roberto worked at El Vaquero until about four years ago, getting out before "all that drama" involving a tax conspiracy that sent the former manager and owner to federal prison. The Oyervides in September bought and redesigned the former El Vaquero building.
"The remodel took a lot of work. We knocked out three walls ... added in the arches and the bar. The bar turned out really, really gorgeous," Shera said. "There is no more carpet. Everything's tiled. ... New booths, new tables. We remodeled the bathrooms. ... The kitchen got ripped apart and cleaned and put back together."
The colors are vibrant, a tradition in Mexico, Roberto said.
"People like to paint their houses these bright colors," Shera interpreted.
Roberto made frozen margaritas after lunch. From 3-10 p.m., Monday-Thursday, margaritas cost 99 cents.
"Pretty good deal," she says.
