Canada Supports Clean Energy Development at G20 Energy Ministerial Meeting

BEIJING, China, June 30, 2016 /CNW/ - Clean energy and energy efficiency are critical to building new jobs for Canadians and reducing costs for Canadian businesses and homes, as part of Canada's commitment to strengthening the clean growth economy and protecting the environment, both at home and abroad.

As demonstrated at the North American Leaders' Summit in Ottawa this week, Canada is leading the world in cross-border cooperation to build competitiveness for our energy, building, manufacturing and auto industries by partnering on clean energy and technology solutions for today's and tomorrow's clean markets.

Building on the Government's commitment to address climate change and promote clean technology innovation, Kim Rudd, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Jim Carr, represented Canada this week at the G20 Energy Ministerial Meeting in China.

Parliamentary Secretary Rudd highlighted Canada's contributions to G20 objectives, including increasing North American collaboration to better integrate our electricity grids to ensure clean, reliable energy for our people and further improving energy efficiency — creating jobs and lowering costs fo industry globally.

A Natural Gas Day event was held as part of the G20, where Ms. Rudd discussed Canada's potential as a low-emission, world-class supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) along with the benefits that renewable and energy-efficient technologies from Canada could bring to international partners looking for less polluting sources of energy to replace coal power. Collaboration among G20 countries is essential to advancing international clean energy development and cooperation as we transition toward a clean energy, low-carbon economy of the future. The Government of Canada is working hard to develop Canada's LNG industry to create new jobs for Canadians and support global energy security.

Discussions and outcomes of the G20 Energy Ministerial Meeting will help set the stage for the G20 Leaders' Summit, to take place in Hangzhou, China, in September 2016. Canada remains committed to re-energizing cooperation on reducing impediments to trade and commerce among our countries, creating more opportunities for Canadians and our partners abroad.
