Camera to watch Clearfield's assets [Standard-Examiner, Ogden, Utah]

(Standard-Examiner (Ogden, UT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) June 18--CLEARFIELD -- Clearfield police are close to installing a "unique" wireless network pole camera surveillance system, which will be used to protect city assets.

On June 14, the Clearfield City Council unanimously approved Alphacorp Security Inc., of West Valley City, to serve as the vendor for the system, which is expected to be operational by June 2012.

"The basis for the project would be to protect our assets," Clearfield Police Assistant Chief Mike Stenquist said.

The video surveillance equipment will be installed in public locations, such as city parks.

Stenquist said the $200,000 system will consist of 15 pole-mounted cameras, placed strategically throughout the city.

The wireless network will capture all the video footage from the cameras and send it to a central location to be viewed, said Dave Porter, security manager for Alphacorp. This will help police understand some of the activities going on in the city and which of those activities need attention, he said.

"The thing that makes this unique is that they are implementing a wireless network across their entire geographic footprint," Porter said.

Porter said he would be surprised if any other major Northern Utah city has installed a citywide wireless network for the purpose of having a video surveillance system.

About 18 months ago, Clearfield police were approved for the pole camera equipment after receiving from the Bureau of Justice Assistance a $425,000 grant, of which $200,000 will be used for the pole cameras, Stenquist said.

The remaining grant money is being used to buy laptop computers for the city's patrol cars.

Installing the cameras will be a fairly large project, with 15 pole cameras to be placed on city property throughout the community, Stenquist said. The pole cameras will be installed in out-of-the-way places so as not to detract from the aesthetics of the public property, but not hidden in such a way as to invade someone's privacy.

Clearfield's system is modeled after one established in Sandy city, he said.

"They have had success with it," Stenquist said.

Three to four years ago, Sandy became one of the first cities to employ the technology of having a citywide wireless network attached to video surveillance equipment, Porter said.

The council approved the selection of Alphacorp Security as the vendor, with the exception of Councilman Mark R. Shepherd and Councilwoman Kathryn Murray, who were excused from Tuesday's meeting.

The next step in the project will be to meet with the vendor and negotiate what the city expects from the system, Stenquist said.

Alphacorp Security has been in business since 1993.
