Cameo Communications, Inc. Taps Staccato Communications' Ripcord(TM) Solution For PC Products Based on Certified Wireless USB
SAN DIEGO --(Business Wire)-- June 1, 2006 -- Cameo Communications, Inc., an international network products supplier based in Taiwan, has selected Staccato Communications' Ripcord(TM) family of single-chip, all-CMOS solutions for its PC dongle and hub products based on Certified Wireless USB. Cameo is a key supplier to many of the largest PC, peripheral, and accessory brand names in the US and worldwide, and enables those customers to offer Certified Wireless USB products on retail shelves by year-end.
"The major retail customers are seeing great demand for Certified Wireless USB products. Our goal is to take the lead in supplying this demand, as we have done in other markets, by forming strategic relationships, aggressively developing the channel, and maintaining a clear perception of market needs," said Frank Kuo, product marketing director, Cameo Communications. "We believe our selection of Staccato's Ripcord chip will help us deliver state-of-the-art products in the U.S. beginning in the fourth quarter of this year."
According to market research and consulting firm, Parks Associates, the estimated worldwide market for UWB-enabled products is expected to reach nearly 100 million unit shipments by year-end 2007, with a significant share of those products aimed at cable replacement for the PC, peripheral, and accessory markets.
"This early Certified Wireless USB announcement by Staccato and Cameo confirms our assumption that the early ultra-wideband market will be driven by such solutions as dongles, hubs, and other add-on products to retrofit existing devices," said Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst at Parks Associates. "We expect a strong ramp in 2007 with Certified Wireless USB technology embedded directly into PC, peripherals, and other consumer electronics devices."
"We are seeing tremendous demand from customers for Certified Wireless USB. The first wave of products will be dongles, hubs, and add-in cards to enable retrofit of existing PCs and peripherals. As a leading ODM supplier of these products, Cameo is moving aggressively to satisfy that demand quickly. Staccato's Ripcord is the only single-chip, all-CMOS solution and that enables a single-sided board design with very few external components required. This resulted in a low cost, small form-factor, high performance design that was completed very quickly," said Marty Colombatto, CEO of Staccato Communications. "We're working closely with Cameo to enable them to introduce volume products to retail shelves by year-end."
"Staccato Communications continues to show leadership in bringing products to market based on the Certified Wireless USB specification. Customer announcements, such as Cameo Communications, indicate that real products will likely hit retail shelves later this year," said Jeff Ravencraft, chairman and president of the USB Implementers Forum.
