ATLANTA --(Business Wire)—

Kinetic Ventures, the Atlanta and Washington, DC-based venture capital firm, today announced that Campbell B (News - Alert). Lanier III has joined the firm as Senior Director.

“We are delighted to have Cam as a member of our team,” said Nelson Chu, Managing Director in Kinetic Venture's Atlanta office. 'He brings a truly unique and proprietary deal flow to Kinetic Ventures. What's more, entrepreneurs who have worked with Cam will tell you that his support and involvement in their companies changed the arc of their trajectory and amplified the success they might otherwise have had.”

“Kinetic has enjoyed its fair share of success as an early-stage investor in companies like Ciena, Corvis, Cerent and Vertical One,” added Jake Tarr, Managing Director in Kinetic's Washington, DC office, “and I'm pleased to say we have backed the entrepreneurs from each of these companies again because we focus on lasting relationships with our successful entrepreneurs. Cam's the same way. People want to work with him over and over again.”

Lanier is currently the Chairman of ITC Holding Company, LLC through which he has made a number of noteworthy early stage investments in telecom, technology and financial services related companies. Prior to forming ITC, Cam and his now retired business partner William H. Scott III formed Interstate Communications (Telecom*USA), which grew to be the fourth largest long distance provider before it was sold to MCI in 1990 for $1.2 billion. Lanier was later the founding investor and Chairman of PowerTel. PowerTel was acquired by Deutsche Telecom for $4.2 billion in 2000.

“Joining Kinetic Ventures was an easy decision for me. We like the same kinds of investments and we share the same values,' said Lanier. 'They are smart guys who are focused on their business. I like that,” he added.

Lanier was the founding investor of Mindspring Enterprises, a pioneer in the Internet Service Provider arena that was valued at $1 billion when it merged with Earthlink. Mr. Lanier was also the founding investor in Firethorn, a mobile payments company that was acquired in the fall of 2007 by Qualcomm (News - Alert) for over $200 million.
