California Affiliates of Susan G. Komen Applaud Governor Brown for Signing Legislation to Expand Breast Cancer Screening and TreatmentThe seven California Affiliates of Susan G. Komen thanked Gov. Jerry Brown for signing legislation designed to expand breast cancer screening and treatment standards for low-income Californians. The legislation, Assembly Bill 1795, authored by Speaker Emeritus Toni G. Atkins, expands breast cancer and cervical cancer screening and treatment for low-income Californians by covering mammograms for those who show symptoms regardless of age, and by covering treatment for patients who have a recurrence of the same type of cancer in the same part of the body. Neither of these parameters are currently covered by the state's Every Woman Counts Program, the state-funded Breast and Cervical Cancer Treament Program. "We are ecstatic that this bill has been signed to expand access to women showing signs of breast cancer regardless of their age," said Komen Sacramento Executive Director, Kelly Mac Millan, "This legislation will save lives, and we are honored that Assembly Speaker Atkins chose to champion AB 1795." The Susan G. Komen Sacramento Valley affiliate's public policy group, Komen California Collaborative Public Policy Committee, and Speaker Emeritus Atkins have been paramount in pushing this legislation through since the beginning of the year. The legislation was co-authored by Assembly Member Cristina Garcia, Assembly Member Lorena Gonzalez and Senator Richard Pan, and received nearly unanimous bi-partisan support throughout its lifecycle. "By working together, and ensuring access to quality screening and treatment for all women in California, we can change the outcome for thousands of women in this state," said Mac Millan.
