C3 Energy Spearheads Utility Cybersecurity Workshop [Global Data Point]

(Global Data Point Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) More than 20 industry stakeholders participated in the event, including representatives ranging from Enel, Exelon, Entergy, and Gas Natural Fenosa to Fireeye and Mandiant to the DOE/DHS Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for the Power Grid (TCIPG) Center, Team for Research in Ubiquitous Secure Technology (TRUST), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and University of California, Berkeley. Held at the C3 Energy headquarters in Redwood City, Calif., on Oct. 14 and 15, 2014, C3 Energy convened these industry leaders to further the dialogue around smart grid operational cybersecurity, which is a critical area of concern for utilities. Discussions included deep dives into the tools utilities are implementing today to identify and respond to potential incidents, major business and regulatory drivers, ongoing academic research, and detailed use cases for software analytic solutions.

"Combining power systems and IT for OT awareness to improve cybersecurity responses has been a constant goal for smart grid operators. The C3 Energy cybersecurity workshop focused on high priority use cases for electric grid operators. Having the decision makers and experts around the table led to a practical conversation around analytics to diagnose, prevent, and respond to grid threats," said William Sanders, department head at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Department of Electrical and Computer Science and director of TCIPG. "In this knowledge-sharing workshop, we brainstormed approaches to ensure security and compliance and build upon value-driving cybersecurity software applications, like C3 Grid Cybersecurity Analytics." C3 Grid Cybersecurity Analytics™ is an advanced Software-as-a-Service application that enables utility operators to identify, prioritize, and mitigate grid cybersecurity risks on utility enterprise and operational networks. From the identification of individual equipment risks for NERC CIP or other cybersecurity compliance in the United States to the prioritization of incident response and diagnosis of network behavior worldwide, C3 Grid Cybersecurity Analytics helps utility cybersecurity teams improve their handling of risks and deployment of mitigation resources.

"C3 Grid Cybersecurity Analytics enables utility operators to improve cybersecurity incident response time, reduce incident diagnostic and management costs, and proactively increase resilience of the enterprise and operational grid against potential threats," said C3 Energy President and Chief Technology Officer Ed Abbo. "With this workshop, we assembled experts in utility cybersecurity and computer science to identify the most effective data analytics and game theory techniques to detect coordinated attacks against critical infrastructure and recommend effective responses to quickly isolate those attacks."
