BVA taxpayers get slots boost
(The Valley Independent Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jul. 22--ROSTRAVER TOWNSHIP -- Belle Vernon Area School District taxpayers who applied for real estate tax credit generated by slots revenue will receive a little extra change next month.
The school board Monday approved a 43 cent increase per tax rebate for the 5,500 district residents who submitted applications last year under the Homestead Farmstead Exclusion Act.
The rebates will be $170.40 per eligible property owner.
Superintendent Robert Nagy said the small increase is the result of property value assessments recently received for the five municipalities that comprise the district: Belle Vernon, Fayette City and North Belle Vernon boroughs and Washington and Rostraver townships.
For the 2008-2009 fiscal year, Belle Vernon Area will receive $942,543 in state gaming revenue. The district will adjust property tax bills through local tax collectors.
The allocation is part of the first round of gaming-related tax credit.
Nagy said the residents will be notified by mail about the tax credit the beginning of next month.
Homeowners must apply each year to receive the tax credit.
Back-up on way
In an unrelated matter, the board approved the $25,119 purchase of a back-up generator for the high school heating system.
Installation will cost another $5,400.
Flexibility added
Director Dan Sepesky said a new 24-passenger bus will be used for field trips, after-school trips and transportation for students living in remote areas.
The students previously had to access bus stops far from their homes.
The board hired:
- Dr. James A. Solan as the school physician for 2008-2009 at a salary of $12,000.
- Eugene C. Scaramucci and Edward L. Baron as school dentists at a rate of $3 per examination.
- Jamie D. Palenchar, full-day Title I math teacher, at a salary of $46,708.
- Elementary teachers Christ-opher J. Evancho, Angela Kozura, Jennifer Leah Patterson, Susan Maria Surovchak and William Lofink Jr. Each will receive a $43,306 salary.
