Business Wire's XHTML Format, Which Provides a More Stylized and Searchable Online News Display, to Be Available via Comtex News Network
SAN DIEGO --(Business Wire)-- Business Wire's display of news in XHTML --a format that retains the features and functionality of the original document while enhancing its online searchability--will soon be available to subscribers of Comtex News Network, a leading real-time information aggregator serving the media and financial markets, it was announced today.
Business Wire became the first newswire to transmit in XHTML (eXtensible Hypertext Markup Language) in September 2006. XHTML is an advanced online publishing tool that enables IR and PR professionals to stylize and optimize their news, resulting in a more user-friendly web presentation.
XHTML allows the content provider to exercise more control re the look and feel of their release; the issuer is able to embed hyperlinks behind keywords, present wider earnings tables that include underlines, and include bullets & superscript notations. Dozens of major portals and websites worldwide have already embraced the XHTML format, including Yahoo Finance!, Google News and Morningstar.
Key visual elements of XHTML delivery are:
-- Bold, italicize, underline text
-- Control text alignment: centering headlines, for example
-- Utilize bullet points
-- Embed hyperlinked keywords/anchor text
-- Superscript/subscript text and footnote marks
-- Support wider financial tables, which can be copied and pasted into popular spreadsheet programs
-- Create subhead headlines
-- Support unique language font characters
-- Support special font characters
Adoption of these features can improve the search engine rankings of a news release. Appropriate hyperlinks and relevant formatting such as bolded keywords and bulletted highlights may enhance a release's search engine optimization (SEO) and visibility.
"Business Wire has been delivering its news in XHTML for almost two years," said Cathy Baron Tamraz, Business Wire's president and CEO, in making the announcement. "XHTML is another example of Business Wire's technology leadership, and willingness to pioneer industry standards. The launch of our proprietary NX news delivery platform in 2003, which has since earned a U.S. patent, remains the prototype for simultaneous and secure real-time news delivery to a global audience. Clearly, Business Wire has taken a lead role in influencing the future direction of the news and information industries."
"We are very pleased to be distributing Business Wire's XHTML press releases throughout our extensive network of corporate and database clients," said Chip Brian, Comtex's president and CEO. "The availability of XHTML technology will bring an extensive array of benefits to our customers, as well as providing Business Wire's clients with further targeted distribution among our client base."
