Building bridges - and interest [Bristol Evening Post (England)]

(Bristol Evening Post (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) THEY link countries, cities and neighbourhoods and most of us cross at least one every day. They've been the scene of some of history's bloodiest conflicts, had songs and poems written about them and plenty have been destroyed or built to help shorten wars. Now a special exhibition in Bristol aims to get people more interested in bridges.

Running until November 16 at the Architecture Centre, next to the Arnolfini on Bristol's Harbourside, the exhibition - called Desire Lines: Romance and Rationalism in Bridge Design - has been laid on to educate residents about bridge design.

The exhibition, designed by graphic designer Luke Barrow, has been timed to run in the build-up to the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Clifton Suspension Bridge in December.

Architecture Centre manager Rob Gregory told the Post: "This exhibition reminds us of a deep-set desire to bridge gaps, make connections and push technology.

"It starts with excerpts from Brunel's own story before presenting five new case studies, over 75 Top Trump-style playing cards, six build-your-own-bridge kits and interviews with those who are writing today's stories of romance and rationalism in bridge design." Bristol-based Amalgam models made the bridge-building kits and the Institution of Structural Engineers, whose members rallied to finish the Clifton Suspension Bridge after Brunel's death, are contributing, along with volunteers, to put the exhibition on. ? For those who want to hear from expert engineers and architects there is a special event tomorrow at 6.30pm at the centre with leading engineer Alan Baxter, along with architects Martin Knight and Renato Benedetti. Entry is Pounds 8/Pounds 6concs, including refreshments.
