BSNL 'docks' it
(The Statesman (India) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Statesman News Service KOLKATA, Sept. 23.-You're in Vellore and your mobile phone just ran out of money. How are you going to recharge it? BSNL's new initiative will allow you to call up a toll free number and recharge it! Once you call the number, an automated voice will ask you the amount you want to recharge your BSNL mobile phone with and your phone will be recharged. The amount will be added to your landline bill, Mr SK Chakraborty, chief general manager, Calcutta Telephones, said. To avail this service, which BSNL calls 'docking', a subscriber has to register both his/her landline and mobile number with the telecom company. The service has been launched in the West Bengal circle and in Kolkata as a pilot project. 'If this pilot project is successful here, the service will be launched all over the country,' said Mr Shakeel Ahmad, minister of state, communication and information technology. Today, BSNL also launched value added services, such as ringtones, horoscope readings, sports news and so on. A BSNL subscriber can avail these services by dialing 12555. The call charges will be Rs 5 per minute from a landline and Rs 1.20 per 30 seconds from a mobile phone. The public sector mobile phone operator also plans to bring in triple play within six months all over the country. Mr TK Sen, general manager, IT, said: 'Within six months, BSNL will be ready to launch video-on-demand, along with data (Internet) and voice over your telephone line. 3G capabilities will also be rolled out within this year.' Also in the pipeline is IPTV, Mr R Agarwal, CGM, West Bengal Telecom Circle, said.
