RCOM, TATA MOTORS AMONG FIRMS FACING HIGHEST MTM RISKS:
REPORT
NEW DELHI - Noting that Indian firms face a high risk of
mark-to-market losses due to a volatile forex market, a
brokerage firm has named telecom major Reliance Communications
and auto giant Tata Motors among five blue-chip companies
estimated to have suffered the most during 2008-09.
In its quarter-end analysis for the period ended March 31,
brokerage and equity research firm Religare Hichens Harrison
(RHH) has also named Punj Lloyd, Bharat Forge and JSW Steel
among the five major companies estimated to have been hit
hardest by the MTM losses during the just-ended fiscal.
COMPETITION INTENSIFIES IN CHINA'S MOBILE PHONE MARKET
BEIJING - China's mobile phone market competition has
intensified as the three leading carriers continue to adjust
strategies, stimulated by the telecom industry reshuffle and
blossoming 3G business.
The three carriers, China Mobile (SEHK:094; CHL.NYSE), China
Telecom (SEHK:0728; CHA.NYSE) and China Unicom (SEHK:0762;
SSE:600050; CHU.NYSE) recently released their financial report
for 2008 and operating statistics for February.
AUSTRALIAN GOVT RELEASES DETAILS OF TASMANIA BROADBAND
ROLLOUT
HOBART - Tasmania will be the first state in Australia to
get the federal government's planned national broadband
network.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Premier David Bartlett
detailed the Tasmanian plan to deliver broadband speeds up to
100 times faster than currently available at joint news
conference in Devonport on Wednesday.
AUST GOVT MINISTERS CAN'T SAY HOW MUCH NBN WILL COST

CANBERRA - Senior government ministers can't say how much
taxpayers will have to contribute to the A$43 billion (US$30.48
billion) national broadband network (NBN).
Potentially it could be A$22 billion, Communications
Minister Stephen Conroy says.
SOFTEX TAIPEI PARTICIPANTS TO OPEN MORE BOOTHS TO PROMOTE
TRADE
TAIPEI - Despite the dark cloud of global recession that has
engulfed Taiwan for several months, manufacturers and traders
in 3C products still regard the upcoming Softex Taipei show as
a good opportunity to promote sales and have applied to set up
more booths at the venue than ever before.
The 2009 Softex Taipei will take place at the Taipei World
Trade Center April 9-13. It will be the only 3C (computer,
communications and consumer electronics) products show
targeting consumers in the first half of the year in Taipei,
according to the Taipei Computer Association (TCA), which
organizes the annual event.
BLACKBERRY MAKER RIM SEEKS PATENT IN INDIA
NEW DELHI - Manufacturer of popular Blackberry smartphones,
Research In Motion (RIM), has applied for patent in India for
its invention in systems and methods of "information exchange
in wireless servers".
According to a recent journal published by the Controller
General of Patents Designs and Trade Marks, the Canada-based
company has sought patent for wireless systems providing a
mechanism for resource sharing.
DPM SAYS MANY AUSTRALIANS WILL BE KEEN ON BROADBAND
INVESTMENT
CANBERRA - Many Australians will be excited at the
opportunity to invest in the national broadband network and
will grab it with both hands, Deputy Prime Minister Julia
Gillard says.
The federal government has announced it will form a company
with the private sector to build and operate the network with
an investment of A$43 billion (US$30.51 billion) over eight
years.
AUST TREASURER CONFIDENT PRIVATE SECTOR WILL BACK BROADBAND

SYDNEY - Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan is confident the
private sector will come to the party and invest in the
government's high-speed broadband network.
On Tuesday the government announced it would invest A$43
billion (US$30.51 billion) in a super-fast broadband network,
by setting up a new public-private company.

CANBERRA - The federal government is adamant its high-speed
broadband service will be affordable, saying it will put strong
downward pressure on prices.
The government is planning to roll out a national network
from early next year, through a public-private company in which
it holds a majority interest.
S KOREAN TELCO KT AIMS FOR 30 PCT GROWTH IN OPERATING INCOME
SEOUL - KT Corp. (KSE:030200), South Korea's telecom
powerhouse, is looking to grow its operating income this year
by 30 percent, spurred by its recent merger with a mobile phone
affiliate, its top executive said Wednesday.
Installed as new CEO of KT in January, Lee Suk-chae, 63,
former minister of information and communications, successfully
closed a merger between KT and the country's second-largest
mobile carrier KTF Co. two months later in an effort to boost
the company's competitiveness, as its customer base was
shrinking. The merged entity is scheduled to launch on June
1.
TAJIK MOBILE OPERATORS IGNORE MEETING ON PROPOSED ONE GATE
SYSTEM
DUSHANBE - A roundtable meeting on the Tajikistan
government's proposed new regulatory system, the Unified
Communications Center, scheduled for April 3 was not held as
interested sides did not come.
The Association, Media Alliance of Tajikistan, jointly with
the Dushanbe independent TV station, Simoi Mustaqili Tojikiston
(SMT or Independent Television of Tajikistan), was going to
hold a roundtable meeting on problems of the creation of the
unified communications center in the country but it was not
held because of absence of participants representatives of
relevant ministries and organizations, as well as mobile-phone
companies and international organizations were invited to
attend the meeting.
S KOREAN TELECOM GIANT KT EXPECTS LOWER HOUSEHOLD SALES
SEOUL - South Korean telecom giant KT Corp. (KSE:030200)
expects revenue from household subscribers to drop this year
due to its shrinking customer base, a company executive said
Tuesday.
KT's sales of fixed-line phone and broadband Internet
services to households will likely hit 7.5 trillion won (US$5.7
billion) this year, down 5.1 per cent from last year, Ro
Tae-seok, vice president for KT's home customer unit, told a
press conference.

TASMANIA TO PIONEER AUSTRALIA'S HIGH-SPEED INTERNET NETWORK
HOBART - Tasmania is about to go from being a broadband
backwater to becoming the first Australian state to benefit
from a national high-speed internet network.
Premier David Bartlett says the network's arrival as early
as the middle of this year on the state's existing optical
fibre infrastructure will bring "a great leap forward" for
telecommunications and other industries in Tasmania.
INDIA TO DISCONNECT 30 MLN CHINESE-MADE MOBILE PHONES: UK

DHAKA - India is to disconnect more than 30 million
Chinese-made mobile phones amid concerns that the devices could
be used by terrorists, according to a U.K. newspaper report on
Monday.
The Telegraph said mobile phone connections will be
terminated at the end of this month, immediately stripping out
an estimated eight per cent of India's 375 million mobile phone
users.
BRITISH MOBILE PHONE RECYCLING COMPANY REDEEM STARTS UP IN HK
HONG KONG - Redeem Plc, a UK-headquartered mobile phone
recycling specialist, Monday announced the opening of a sales
and processing centre in Hong Kong.
The new operation will provide entry to a number of core
emerging mobile markets including Mainland China, India, Africa
and South America.
UZBEK IT, TELCO SECTOR UP 27% ON-YR IN Q1
TASHKENT - The Uzbek Cabinet held a session to sum up the
first quarter results of the information systems and
telecommunication sector.
The sector produced goods and rendered service for 387.8
billion soums (US$267.9 million) in the first quarter of 2009,
up 27.3 per cent year-on-year.
TERRIA CONSORTIUM WELCOMES AUSTRALIAN GOVT'S BROADBAND PLAN
SYDNEY - The consortium backed by Optus that unsuccessfully
bid for the right to build a national broadband network has
welcomed the federal government's decision to build the project
through a government owned company.
Terria was originally a group of nine telcos who launched a
joint bid to build the NBN, but it eventually lodged a bid
under the name Optus Networks Investments when several
companies pulled out of the consortium.
AUSTRALIAN TELCO OPTUS BACKS GOVT'S BROADBAND PLAN
SYDNEY - Australia's second largest telco Optus is
supportive of the federal government's decision to build a
national broadband network (NBN) through a government owned
company, despite its failed bid to roll out the network.
"We're absolutely supportive and welcome this announcement,"
Optus director of government and corporate affairs Maha
Krishnapillai told AAP on Tuesday.

NEW YORK - Sanjay Jha, India-born chief executive of mobile
phone maker Motorola, has emerged as the highest paid CEO in
the US, taking home a total of US$104.5 million in 2008.
Jha, along with Citigroup chief Vikram Pandit, have been
named in the American business publication Fortune's list of
"10 Biggest CEO Paychecks".

company could see the country become a world leader in digital
technology, an analyst says.

INDONESIAN GOVT TO REPEAT OFFER FOR ADDITIONAL 3G FREQUENCY

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government will repeat its
additional frequency band offer to operators of third
generation (3G) telecommunications services in a tender to be
held in the middle of this month.
Communications and Informatics Minister Mohammad Nuh said
the additional frequency of 5 MHz for 3G is needed to meet
growing demand for the service
INDIA'S TATA COMM PARTNERS DIMENSION DATA FOR
VIDEOCONFERENCING
NEW DELHI - Telecom firm Tata Communications (BSE:500483)
said it has joined hands with IT services provider Dimension
Data to support the Cisco Systems Telepresence suite of
products on a worldwide basis.
The companies will together provide the entire suite of
services, including bandwidth, telepresence hardware, support,
maintenance and a fully managed service, Tata Communications
said in a statement Monday.
