BRIEF: Wireless technology part of latest installation

Feb 11, 2013 (Reading Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The city's new cameras have one major difference from most of the existing cameras.

They're all wireless, which is cheaper.

Most of the existing cameras feed their signal through fiber-optic lines, but the city has to rent those lines, and that costs $98,000 a year. That's about the cost of three cameras.

Heim said fiber-optic signals are slightly better and less vulnerable to the weather than wireless signals.

Also, wireless cameras need a so-called line-of-sight transmitter, meaning the receiver must see the transmitter, limiting the locations a bit.

"If we could afford to have fiber-optic, that's the way to go." Heim said.

But the city can't afford new fiber-optic rentals, he said.

The wireless signal is encrypted, so Heim doesn't worry about hackers invading the system.

Even if they did, he said, they wouldn't see anything they couldn't see with their own eyes if they were standing at the same corner because the cameras view only public places and are not looking through windows.
