BRIEF: Veterans getting free rides to Birmingham
Jun 14, 2009 (The Decatur Daily - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Area veterans with appointments at the Birmingham Veterans Administration Hospital can ride free from Priceville.
Gordon W. Horton, newly elected commander of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 11, said a bus provided by the VA will be in the Priceville High School faculty parking lot each morning, Monday through Friday, from approximately 8:30 to 8:45. The free rides began June 1.
To arrange rides, Horton said, veterans should try to call two days before their appointment.
"They should call either the Madison VA Clinic at 256-772-6220 or the Huntsville VA Clinic at 256-535-3100 to get their names on the list for roundtrip transportation," he said.
Horton said it's important that veterans have an appointment letter even if they're going to a follow-up appointment.
"We've already had one case of a follow-up where the veteran didn't have the letter," he said. "Anyone who doesn't have either letter should phone the VA Hospital at 205-934-7301."
