BRIEF: Verizon Wireless invested $166 million in Illinois network in 2011 [Chicago Tribune]
(Chicago Tribune (IL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 06--Verizon Wireless said Monday it spent $166 million on its Illinois network in 2011, an investment that included the company's expansion of its 4G Long-Term Evolution network to markets outside of Chicago.
The wireless carrier, which launched 4G LTE in Chicago in late 2010, spent more than $179.7 million on its Illinois network last year. In 2011, the operator brought its 4G network to Rockford, Springfield, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and five sporting venues in the Chicago area. Verizon said its other network improvements made last year include adding new cell sites, installing back-up generators at cell sites and laying groundwork for further expansion of the 4G network to other markets in Illinois.
AT&T said last week that it added capacity to its cell sites and activated almost 45 new cell sites or towers in Illinois during 2011, a year in which the carrier launched its own 4G LTE network in Chicago. The company said it invested nearly $3.5 billion in Illinois from 2009 to 2011. It was not able to provide an investment figure for 2011 alone.
