BRIEF: 'Turner to Cezanne': Art lovers eager for show: Museum of Art members snap up tickets for exhibit coming in March

Dec 03, 2008 (The State - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Phone lines at the Columbia Museum of Art have lit up this week like a J.M.W. Turner sunset painting.

Museum members could reserve free tickets starting Monday for the upcoming "Turner to Cezanne" show -- and they have been, even though the show doesn't open until March.

On Monday about 30 members reserved tickets; another 30 purchased memberships to the museum and made reservations.

"We think 30 is really good for one day," said Ellen Woodoff, the museum's director of communications.

Columbia is the opening venue for the exhibition from the National Museum of Wales, which includes art by Turner and Paul Cezanne as well as Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Vincent Van Gogh.It runs March 6 to June 7.

"Whenever I go to the front desk, which I do frequently, they're on the phone and the phone is ringing," Woodoff said.

Regular admission to the museum is $5 for nonmembers; admission to this exhibition will be $15 for nonmembers. A basic museum membership is $35 annually. The museum is using this show and the extra charge as a way to increase membership. It currently has about 2,700 members.

Tickets for nonmembers go on sale Dec. 15.
