BRIEF: Trooper loses appeal in fiery, fatal crash
KNOXVILLE, Feb 14, 2012 (The Knoxville News-Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The trooper who lost his job for driving past a fatal wreck last year was denied a reprieve today.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol moved to fire Trooper Charles Van Morgan after the Nov. 26 wreck in North Knox County that killed Gordon Kyle Anito, 20. Video from Morgan's cruiser showed he drove past the wreck and didn't stop.
He returned more than five minutes later to a car ablaze. He later claimed he didn't see the wreck, then said he saw the car but thought it was parked.
Morgan appealed his firing. Tennessee Safety Commissioner Bill Gibbons denied that appeal.
Morgan can appeal Gibbons' decision. The firing becomes final Feb. 20.
