BRIEF: Startup helps carriers ease transfer to fiber-optic lines
(Sun, The (Lowell, MA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Nov. 15--WESTFORD -- A local startup is developing technology that allows telecom carriers to service their broadband deployments remotely and instantaneously.
Four-year-old Sagamore Systems recently released its Automated XConnect Zero-Touch solution, demonstrating it last month at a convention in Baltimore.
Co-founder and Vice President of Marketing Eric Hedlund said many "Tier 1" carriers, including AT&T and Qwest, are in the process of converting their networks from all copper wire to a final stage -- often referred to as the "last mile" -- that includes fiber-optic lines. The fiber-optic systems allow for wider bandwidth and, hence, so-called triple play services -- voice, data and video.
Sagamore allows carriers that are leveraging their existing copper lines to turn these fiber-optic systems on, service or change them without having to send people out to the actual site.
Hedlund says Sagamore's technology is in trial with several players, which he couldn't name.
Privately-held Sagamore employs about 20 people, most of them in Westford.
