BRIEF: St. Louis man admits using fraud to pay back a fraud [St. Louis Post-Dispatch]

(St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 30--ST. LOUIS -- A St. Louis man on Thursday admitted using money from a new fraud to pay some of the money he owed from an old scheme, federal prosecutors said.

Martin Bachert, 31, who used the alias Martin Federoa, charged a California man $15,800 in August of 2013 for electronic testing equipment, the U.S. Attorney's office said. He then told the California man that the equipment had been stolen while he was in a coma. He later said he'd gotten a job in Ukraine and would repay the money, plus interest, prosecutors said.

Bachert had used some of the money to pay restitution in federal court for a prior mail and wire fraud case, they said. Bachert also admitted stealing an expensive infrared camera from a former employer.

Bachert is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 23 for one count of wire fraud and one count of interstate transportation of stolen property. Prosecutors and Bachert's lawyer are recommending a prison sentence of 18 months.
