BRIEF: Portland's SearchFest hunts for a new keynote speaker after Facebook executive cancels
Feb 14, 2012 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Wanted: A keynote speaker to fill the spot of a Facebook executive --fast.
The social media site's Internet marketing manager canceled his Feb. 24 talk at Portland's annual SearchFest, leaving organizers two weeks to book a replacement.
Facebook's Brian Pipegrass was set to headline one of two keynote addresses during the all-day conference that covers online marketing topics. But sponsors learned last week that he won't be able to attend.
The talk appeared to be especially timely: Facebook filed for a much-anticipated initial public offering earlier this month, looking to raise as much as $10 billion.
The pending IPO played a role in the cancellation, according to a statement issued by the Search Engine Marketing Professionals of Portland, which sponsors the annual event.
"There's always something new at Facebook," said Amy Rosenberg, a SearchFest spokeswoman. "We were hoping that they would talk about something new."
Instead, event organizers are working hard to fill the time slot emptied by Facebook, Rosenberg said.
