BRIEF: Police looking for person who stole thousands from Red Lion ATM
WENATCHEE, Mar 12, 2010 (The Wenatchee World - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
In what Wenatchee police are calling "a pretty gutsy move," someone punched a hole in an ATM machine earlier this week at the Red Lion Hotel and stole several thousand dollars.
The twist: The ATM never left the building.
"It's a pretty gutsy move, wheeling out an ATM machine," said Cpl. Randy Chapman of the Wenatchee Police Department.
The machine was reported stolen at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday, and might have been missing from the main floor of the hotel since the night before, Chapman said. It had been located in a hallway off the main lobby and near the bar.
A manager found the ATM Thursday morning in a back room on the hotel's lower level.
Sgt. Cherie Smith, a spokeswoman for the police department, said the machine is heavy but could be moved by one person using a hand truck.
She said officers think a hammer and chisel were used to punch a hole, about 6 inches in diameter, in the side of the machine, then pliers were used to peel back the metal. At that point, the thief could force open the latches, open the front of the machine and access the money.
Chapman said police have no suspects but are testing the machine for fingerprints.
