BRIEF: Plywood battleship leads Veterans Day parade
EL PASO, Nov 07, 2009 (El Paso Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A plywood model of the U.S.S. Missouri, battleship gray with smoking deck guns, led thousands of Downtown marchers who paid tribute Saturday to the nation's veterans.
The U.S.S. Missouri float, built by members of the El Paso Veterans Affairs Health Care System in their spare time, won the first-place prize.
Bringing up the rear were active-duty soldiers driving a giant armored vehicle of the type used in Iraq and Afghanistan.
People lining the route waved and shouted "thank you" to veterans in the parade.
"I came to pay my respects to all my fellow veterans, some who are alive and some who are dead," said Michael Ybarra, a Gulf War veteran who watched with his three children.
See Sunday's El Paso Times for complete details on salutes to veterans in the El Paso area.
