BRIEF: Local unemployment drops: Job growth weak but steady; gains reported in government, health care, services, retail
(Gazette, The (Colorado Springs, CO) (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) May 17--The Colorado Springsarea unemployment rate fell for the first time in a year while job growth remained stable, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment reported Friday.
The area's jobless rate, when adjusted for seasonal changes, fell in April to 5.2 percent from 5.3 percent in March. That's the first such decline since the area's unemployment rate fell to 4 percent in April 2007 from 4.1 percent in the previous month.
Job growth in the area compared with the same month a year earlier remained weak but steady during April at 1.2 percent, or about 3,000 jobs, for the second consecutive month. Area job growth has fluctuated between 1.2 percent and 1.8 percent since mid-2007.
Gains in government, health care, services and retail more than offset losses in manufacturing, finance, construction and information. The unemployment rate is calculated from a survey of residents, while the job growth number comes from an employer survey.
The statewide unemployment rate last month remained unchanged from March at 4.4 percent, while job growth compared with a year ago stayed at 1.8 percent.
